The Calcasieu County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday that the incidents took place Sunday in Starks, a Louisiana town near the border with Texas.
Police found a 14-year-old girl “suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of her head”. She was taken to hospital with “non-fatal injuries”.
According to police, investigators learned that a number of young people were “playing hide and seek in the neighborhood and hiding on a neighbor’s property”.
In response to a question from investigators, David Doyle explained that “after seeing the shadows outside his house, he went to get his gun” inside the house.
The sheriff’s office said the 58-year-old “returned outside and noticed people fleeing his property, at which point he started shooting in their direction, unknowingly hitting the girl.”
The man was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including assault with a weapon, with aggravated sentencing.
This incident is part of a series of regular incidents that have turned into bloody tragedies in the United States.
In April, a 20-year-old woman was killed in upstate New York after she accidentally drove her car into the driveway of a private home.
That same month, in Texas, a man opened fire on ‘Boom Boom Girls’ cheerleaders, after one tried to open her car door as she thought that was his. A black teenager has been shot and seriously injured after mistakenly entering a home in Missouri.
