The Straw House, or “House Lakash” as the Mosulis call it, is one of the oldest houses in the city, which includes several basements and cellars, each of which was built for a specific purpose.
The Sheikh of Bab Laksh area in Mosul, Kanaan Younes, told Sky News Arabia: “They used to build houses, especially in old houses, basements and halls. The basement is deeper.
These cellars and basements are used for winter storage of supplies and household supplies, and some of them contain wells of pure water, and are used as shelter for family members, in case of emergency .
Mahmoud Samir, a resident of Old Mosul, said: “This basement is the most important corner of the house, and without it we would all have perished.”
Another resident, Mayser Hazim, said: “I have lived in this house for 47 years, in addition to my father and my uncles. This house is over 100 years old.
The depth of these catacombs and caves varies from 3 to 5 meters, while some of them are up to 7 meters long and are characterized by warm weather in winter and cool weather in summer.
And these ancient catacombs have stories and anecdotes in the life of the people of Mosul through different eras.
