Hilda Bachi started cooking last Thursday in an attempt to break the world record set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in the Guinness Book of 87 hours and 45 minutes in 2019.

As of 15:00 GMT on Monday, Bachi had cooked for more than 97 hours in Lekki district of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, for a worship service in the West African country.

Patchi has received a lot of encouragement in the culinary scene and online for hitting 100 hours.

No one from Guinness World Records was present in the cooking area, but the organization tweeted that they were aware of the chef’s attempt to break the cooking record.

“We need to review all the evidence first before officially announcing the new record,” the foundation said.

In her bid to break the record, the Nigerian leader said on Thursday that she wanted to show the hard work and determination of Nigerian youth and also as a campaign for young African women facing marginalization in society.

Bachi said she hopes the world will learn more about Nigerian cuisine.

Difficult experience

As of 15:00 GMT on Thursday, Bachi has been cooking dozens of Nigerian dishes, such as jollof rice, one of West Africa’s most popular dishes.

Patchi only had five minutes off every hour or one hour every 12 hours, to shower, check up and rest.

Patchi had thousands of locals and celebrities cheering her on during the barbecue during the day and night, and relayed her attempt on multiple streaming platforms.

After surpassing the current cooking record, President Muhammadu Buhari tweeted on Monday: “It was a great day for Nigeria. Hilda’s drive and ambition sparked great interest and insight into the uniqueness of cooking Nigerian”.
