A deal between Russia and Iran to build a competing Suez Canal rail line

The railway line between the cities of Rasht and Astara is considered an important link in the international corridor, which aims to connect India, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan and other countries by rail and maritime. Russia says this corridor can compete with the Suez Canal as a major global trade route, according to Reuters.

“The unique north-south transport route, of which the Rasht-Astara railway will be a part, will contribute to a significant diversification of global transport flows,” Putin said.

He added that the 162-kilometer railway line along the Caspian Sea coast will connect Russian ports in the Baltic Sea with Iranian ports in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf.

“This agreement is undoubtedly an important and strategic step towards cooperation between Tehran and Moscow,” Raisi said.

Western sanctions imposed on both Russia and Iran have prompted the two countries to strengthen their political and economic relations
