New Delhi: Leaders of the Quad group are likely to meet in Hiroshima, Japan this week in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will participate. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra gave this information on Thursday. Foreign Secretary Kwatra told reporters that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for Japan on the morning of May 19 and will visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima where he will participate in the annual summit of the G-7, a group of developed economies of the world.” He said that during his visit to Japan, there is a plan to hold a meeting of the leaders of the Quad group in which US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate.
The meeting of the leaders of the proposed Quad countries in Sydney has been canceled due to US President Joe Biden postponing his visit to Australia to focus on the severe economic crisis in the country. When asked about a proposal regarding the proposed meeting of the Quad leaders in Hiroshima, the Foreign Secretary said, “Whenever the leaders of the Quad group meet, it is a Quad meeting.” All of you are aware that it is not happening due to various reasons and taking advantage of the presence of the four leaders in Hiroshima, there is a plan to organize this meeting there.
Kwatra said that further discussions are held in the group on the basis of the agenda related to cooperation, collaboration etc. agreed upon in the previous meeting. In this, discussions can be held on how to increase cooperation on economic issues, shipping, development, Indo-Pacific etc. He said that only the venue of the quad meeting in Sydney has changed but there has been no change regarding its cooperation etc. On Tuesday, Biden said, “I am cutting my travel time.” I am canceling my visits to Australia and Papua New Guinea during this visit for a conclusive discussion with Congress leaders.
He said, “I spoke to Prime Minister Albanese of Australia today and told him about the current situation.” For the first time in history, Biden discussed the issue with the opposition Republican Party to prevent default in US debt repayment. and has decided to cancel his visit to Australia citing uncertainty and serious wide ranging talks.
