German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said Ukraine does not meet the criteria for membership of the North Atlantic Alliance and will not become a member of NATO in the foreseeable future. The German leader said so in an interview with Welt.
“Everyone sees that it’s not going to happen in the foreseeable future,” Scholz said.
He recalled that for NATO membership there are “a number of conditions that Ukraine cannot currently fulfill”. But that will not prevent new arms deliveries to Kyiv, including after the end of the Ukrainian conflict.
“After the war, Ukraine will be equipped with Western-made weapons,” Scholz said.
Earlier, former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor to US President Henry Kissinger, in an interview with The Economist, spoke out in favor of Ukraine’s admission to NATO, as it would deprive Kiev of excessive independence in terms of triggering conflicts.
