Moscow: A Russian court on Tuesday extended the arrest of Wall Street Journal reporter Ivan Gershkovich by three months. Gershkovich is the first American correspondent to be detained in Russia on espionage charges since the Cold War. Ivan Gershkovich (31), a US citizen, has been ordered to be held in custody until 30 August. He was arrested in March on charges of espionage while on a reporting trip to Russia. Gershkovich, his employer and the US government have denied allegations that he was a spy.
Tuesday’s hearing by the Russian court was not announced in advance and the entire matter has been kept confidential. Russian officials have not detailed what evidence they have to support the espionage allegations against Gershkovich. Media has been kept away from various legal proceedings. The US government has said that Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained and demanded his immediate release. He is lodged in Moscow’s Lefortevo prison.
