Director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. SA Khristianovich (ITAM) of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Shiplyuk, who was arrested in August 2022 in a treason case, is accused of passing classified data to China. On this subject informed Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
According to the agency, Shiplyuk handed over documents at a scientific conference in China in 2017. The scientist himself maintains his innocence and claims that the information in question was freely available on the Internet, according to Reuters sources.
The FSB did not respond to the agency’s request. Press Secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov declared On May 24, the Kremlin sees no trend in the arrests of scientists suspected of passing classified data to China. According to Peskov, the Russian special services “perform their duties”, “protect state secrets and control the situation” for possible treason. This work is done “permanently”, added the Kremlin spokesman.
China’s Foreign Ministry said Russia-China relations are based on “non-alignment, non-confrontation and focus on third parties”.
In addition to Shiplyuk, since the summer of 2022, two other ITAM scientists have been arrested: chief researcher Anatoly Maslov and the founder of the High-Speed Aerogasdynamics Laboratory Valery Zvegintsev. Maslov’s arrest became known in June 2022. Source TASS informed that he is accused of transferring secret data related to hypersound. Zvegintsev’s arrest was revealed by an open letter from ITAM representatives to the Russian authorities. By data TASS, the scientist could be suspected of treason because of an article on gas dynamics in an Iranian magazine.
What did the arrested ITAM scientists do?
Alexander Shiplyuk directed laboratory for the study of problems of high-speed flight using unique aerodynamic facilities, and has in recent years conducted research “on a wide range of fundamental and applied problems in the field of flight aerodynamics at great speed”.
Anatoly Maslov was engaged developments in the field of gas aerodynamics. The scientist carried out the first numerical calculations in Russia of the stability of compressible flows and showed the possibility of “complete stabilization of the supersonic boundary layer by cooling the surface of the plane”. Thanks to Maslov’s developments, for the first time, it was possible to obtain experimentally a complete characterization of linear and nonlinear waves in shear flows. In recent years, the specialist has been working in a new scientific direction – an experimental study of flows at the micro level.
Valery Zveguintsev based high-speed aerogasdynamics laboratory, which in 2006 was headed by Shiplyuk. The journal “Applied Mechanics and Technical Physics” of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences published articles by a scientist devoted to the analysis of the behavior of cumulative jets, the acceleration of massive bodies by methods of dynamics of gases, flights of aircraft with a ramjet, engines of small rockets launched from the surface of the earth, and others operate.
