New York. The US State Assembly of New York is expected to pass a bill to declare Diwali and Lunar New Year as federal holidays.
With this, the years-long efforts of many legislators to declare these festivals a formal holiday in the state will be successful. Speaker of the Assembly Carl Hastie said in a statement on Wednesday that it is important to recognize the rich and diverse culture of New York.
Therefore, it is the intention of the Assembly to declare the Lunar New Year and Diwali holidays in the State of New York prior to the close of our legislative session. We will continue discussions with the stakeholders on how this will change the annual school calendar. A decision in this regard is expected on the bill on June 8, the last day of the legislative session.
