Cinema is part of the cultural interaction between Russia and China and the shortest way for the countries to get to know each other better. However, in Russia, a large audience is not yet familiar with Chinese cinema, and this situation needs to be corrected. Yulia Kapranova, executive director of the Russian-Chinese Committee for Friendship, Peace and Development, said this during the round table “Entrepreneurship in the field of cinema”. The event was organized by the Commissioner to the President of Russia for the Protection of the Rights of Entrepreneurs and the Russian-Chinese Committee for Friendship, Peace and Development.
According to Russian and Chinese analysts, the role of cinema in Russia-China relations is currently underestimated. There are hardly any Chinese films at the Russian box office, and the names of Chinese directors and actors are not widely known. Chinese cinemas also rarely show Russian films.
“We need to develop the format of film festivals and attract the widest possible audience. This can be an incentive for new joint projects between Russia and China in the field of cinema,” said Yulia Kapranova, executive director of the Committee.
There could be more joint projects thanks to Roskino’s Filming Locations in Russia project – promoting Russian regions as filming locations for foreign filmmakers.
“The mission of the project is to open up Russia to the international film industry community, promote the development of regional film production and increase the country’s tourism potential. The Filming Locations in Russia 2023 program consists of six areas: Moscow, Moscow Region, Krasnodar Territory, Kaliningrad Region, St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region,” said Rimma Nailevna Sachunova, Director of Development and business process management at Roskino JSC. She added that a group of Chinese producers are preparing to come to Russia soon to explore possible filming locations.
