As the magazine notes, HMX is a lighter substance than other explosives. Thus, the assumption often made that the intruders could only deliver explosives to the site of the explosions on a larger vessel is no longer valid.
The version of involvement in the sabotage of the Russian side is considered “extremely unlikely”, the publication stressed.
According to Spiegel, “several intelligence services” agree on the involvement of the Ukrainian side in the sabotage. At the same time, the question of whether Ukrainian special services were involved in the explosions, or whether it was some sort of group that the Ukrainian authorities did not control, remains open.
The magazine claims that Germany has received “numerous reports from foreign intelligence agencies” indicating that the perpetrators of the bombings were “among the Ukrainians”.
Western media have repeatedly written about the possible involvement of the Ukrainian side in the sabotage of Nord Stream. The possible involvement of a pro-Ukrainian group in the incident was reported in March by the New York Times, and Die Zeit claimed that the ship which was allegedly used to blow up the pipelines had been rented by a company belonging to two Ukrainian citizens.
An investigation by media companies NDR, WDR and the newspaper SĂĽddeutsche Zeitung showed that a Ukrainian serviceman might be involved in the incident.
