Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling go from the world of dolls to the real world in the Barbie trailer

Even Barbie has existential crises. A full-scale trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film about the cult doll has been released. The mysterious plot is finally clarified after a question that Barbie (Margot Robbie) asks during a dance party at the Dreamhouse: “Have you ever thought about dying?” This typical human anxiety takes its toll on the fantasy world that Barbie possesses. Suddenly, his shower gets cold, jumping off the roof no longer feels like a child’s safe descent to the ground, and his characteristic tiptoe gait is gone.

The Barbie trailer contains the premise that a beloved doll must learn to live outside of her box and dive into the real world, along with Ken. And despite early reports that Aqua’s 1997 hit “Barbie Girl” won’t be featured in the film, a short snippet of the song, or at least a version of it, can be heard at the end of the teaser. According to Apple Music, the film’s soundtrack includes a track called “Barbie World” performed by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua. It’s an interesting move, given that Mattel – the company behind Barbie – previously sued for copyright infringement after the release of Barbie Girls in the 90s.

Barbie hits theaters on July 21.
