Michael Bloomberg: Sultan Al Jaber is the right person to chair the climate summit

– Published on:

Bloomberg added that positive progress on climate-related issues is achieved through cooperation, not conflict, especially ahead of the COP28 Conference of the Parties, to be held in Dubai next November.

Bloomberg pointed out that the signing of the letter opposing Dr Sultan Jaber’s presidency of the next Conference of the Parties came from a small number of members of Congress and the European Parliament, while the vast majority of world leaders continue to support his appointment, including US climate envoy John Kerry and European climate leaders like Ursula von der Leyen and Frans Timmermans.

Huge Emirati investments in clean energy

In response to those requests, Bloomberg said the upcoming talks “require oil-producing nations at the table, including the United States of America, which is the world’s largest oil producer,” adding that the United Arab Emirates “would be the first oil-rich country to host the COP.”

Bloomberg pointed out that “the United Arab Emirates, with the efforts of Sultan Al Jaber, has become one of the countries that invest the most in the field of renewable energy”.

He pointed out that the “Masdar” company for renewable energy, which is headed by Al-Jaber, seeks to generate 100 gigawatts of renewable energy by the end of the decade, a goal that exceeds the ambitions of many countries in position of strength. to reduce carbon emissions globally.

“The more fossil fuel companies are involved in the clean energy transition, as Dr. Sattan Al Jaber is doing, the faster we can move forward,” he said.

Supporting Southern countries in the transition to clean energy

Bloomberg said that as UN Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, he had the opportunity to speak with Dr Sultan “about the progress that we agree needs to happen and how to overcome obstacles”.

Recently, he explained, Bloomberg Philanthropies joined Dr. Sultan and the International Renewable Energy Agency to announce a new partnership to accelerate the deployment of clean energy in the Global South.

“We also discussed a topic that we’ve both spoken about publicly: the need for the World Bank and other development banks and sovereign wealth funds to dedicate more resources to the clean energy transition.”

The outcome of the climate conference is the responsibility of the Member States

Bloomberg called out skeptics on what he considered an important point, namely that “the chair of the climate summit does not decide the outcome of the conference, but the members do.”

He pointed out that some people’s demand to change the conference chair sends a clear message to fossil fuel producers that “we don’t want your help”, noting that “this is not possible at a time when all efforts must be combined to achieve the results we want.”

Bloomberg stressed that he strongly opposes these calls, stressing that “climate change is a huge challenge. We need all allies, especially in the oil and gas industry.”
