Magni Freyr hit rock bottom aged 19 and went through treatment – ‘I was selling my drugs to adults who were injecting when I was 14’

– Published on:

Magni Freyr is 37, father of two, painter and fiancé with a long history of heartbreak and triumph. He is the last interviewee from the Sterk Together podcast.

Magna’s upbringing at Breiðholtin was characterized by lots of domestic violence, few rules, and at a young age he began to show risky behavior.

“I remember you often ended up hanging on to the old man to try and stop him when he hit my mom.”

Magni and her one-year-older twin brothers were sent to a children’s and youth home aged just eight and nine, for a few months. In this house, there were staff who took care of the essentials, feeding the children, etc., but Magni felt a lack of love and attention. Magni went to the country for a few summers and thought it was great and they felt great, until they were too old to take kids with them. After that, he was sent elsewhere.

Abused in the countryside

“When I was 11, I was sent to another country. We were two boys together there. It didn’t take long for the farmer to start abusing us both. I felt the worse that I couldn’t save the boy who was with me, I thought he was younger than me,” he said, adding that this man took away his youth. Magni received a call from his mother once a week, and after two weeks of nightmare, he said: “Mom, I can’t eat anything here, I want to go home.” His mother ordered a ride for her boy, and Magni took the other boy to town.

After Magni came home, after that nightmare, he changed. In the episode, Magni describes brutal abuse by this man, but he kept this secret until 2019 when he trusted himself to seek out Bjarkarhlíð and process the experience.

At the age of 13 he drank Magni for the first time, he immediately felt it was something he would do again.

“I felt bad the next day but I still thought I was going to do it again, I grew and expanded, dared to talk to everyone and became the main guy.” However, it took time until the next one.”

Consumption has risen and changed

At the age of 14, the ball began to roll quite fast, and the consumption both increased and hardened steadily. Before the end of the 9th grade, Magni had started selling his drugs, even watering them down to make more money, and had a certain group of people in business.

“I was 14 selling my drugs to adults who were injecting, but I also got in trouble. I may have promised someone but accidentally sold to someone else. J was just a crazy kid.”

Time has passed, consumption has increased and changed, lies, sales, dishonesty and other things that follow. Magni recounts an incident that made him gagged for the first time: “I came home, at 17, I saw the police were outside but I didn’t give it much thought, I just thought I thought my brother had probably done something. I walk into the apartment and my mom is sitting there with tears in her eyes. She’s been messing around in my room, which I’ve forbidden her to do a lot of times because I’ve been hiding a lot of Shit. She was changing on the bed and found some gear and money and called the police. I didn’t expect that.”

I underwent treatment on my own terms when I was 19

After this incident, Magni went to Libra, but it wasn’t enough. Magna’s sobriety journey began around the age of 19, but then he hit rock bottom and went through treatment on his own terms.

“I met the mother of my first child in this treatment, we started dating when I came from Staðarfell. I joined the organization, at that time it was a bit different and I also been lucky with some guys I’ve met who are still my friends today.”

Magni achieved ten years of sobriety but never revealed his big secret when he worked the tracks. Suddenly the number of fools increased, everyone could drink, one thing or another got out of the routine and he fell into it, for a short time though.

Magni learned a lot from the fall and for the time being has taken a different path than he had tried before to maintain his sobriety. He met the mother of his second child around this time, and this relationship was not built on a solid foundation, so to speak, and therefore did not last long. Following this, Magni began following up with an experienced sponsor who approached him well.

“Once I was in such a bad place I was going to end this life I was completely done but the phone rang again and I heard a voice telling me to answer people can think I’m crazy when I say that but I don’t care.”

Magni recounts the most incredible experience he’s ever had that left him sobbing on the floor. Today, he is a man of faith and proud of it.
