For several days, the border town of Shebekino in the Belgorod region has been under heavy shelling from Ukraine. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported at least six attacks on June 1, in which 12 people were injured. In Belgorod itself, a drone fell and exploded. What’s happening in the region now – in the material of Russian media.

The situation in Shebekino

On the morning of June 1, the governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov informed that the Shebekinsky district has been under “continuous” shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) since the night. He also said that the district and city administration was engaged in the evacuation of people, but for this it was necessary to wait for the end of the shelling.

Later he clarified that Ukraine had fired shells at Shebekino with Grad multiple rocket launcher systems. According to him, a man received a shrapnel wound to the foot. As a result of the attack, the city was left without electricity, and due to a direct shell hit in the dormitory, a fire broke out and destruction was also recorded in the administrative building.

A bus also came under fire from Ukrainian armed forces. There were reports on social media that he transported evacuated residents, but, as the governor said, the bus was empty.

Chebekintsy said “Editors” that attacks on the settlement became more frequent about a week ago, on the night of June 1, many of them either didn’t sleep or woke up around 3 a.m.

“The shelling from three to seven or eight in the morning was constant, didn’t even stop for a few minutes <...> Then my curator from the technical school where I study called me, she said that the buses had arrived and they would pick us up. We got together and took the cat,” said a 19-year-old Shebekino resident.

According to another resident of the town, around six in the morning, her daughter called her and told her to leave Shebekino. “I left, my living creatures stayed there on a leash – chickens and ducks. <…> I wanted to leave, but later. I didn’t know it was that fast. <...> Today the massacre was terrible, I went mad from three o’clock in the morning. It all started at 3:15, maybe even earlier. I’ll go from room to room and then volleys louder, louder and generally non-stop,” she shared.

Another resident says that the night “was terrible”: she had to spend the night in a small house, where it was cold. “The store was destroyed, our house was destroyed. Below us, on the second floor, the glass was broken, and the entire first floor was also broken. There have been many arrivals,” the woman said.

Evacuation

Due to heavy shelling, many residents of Shebekino were evacuated to Belgorod, some are leaving the city on their own. The authorities are not carrying out a mass evacuation of citizens, explaining that it is not safe to gather many people in one place during the bombardments.

Afternoon Vyacheslav Gladkov informed that the largest temporary accommodation center in Belgorod is gradually filling up, so that all arriving residents of Shebekin are sent “to free TACs, where they are registered and provided with everything necessary”.

Later Governor clarified that over the past day in the urban district of Shebekinsky several settlements fell under heavy artillery shelling, as a result of which 12 people were injured, there were no deaths.

“Previously, 4 apartment buildings, 18 private households, 3 administrative buildings, an agricultural enterprise building, an industrial enterprise, a hostel building and a kindergarten, 5 cars and 1 bus suffered various damages” , he wrote in his Telegram channel.

In turn, the head of Shebekino Vladimir Zhdanov, as President Vladimir Putin on the afternoon of June 1 reward Order of Courage said on the air of the Russia 24 television channel, that the head of state also called him and asked him what kind of help the city needed. “It seemed like this to me: the president is so in control of the situation, he understands what is going on. <…> It was very good, our president is with us,” he said.

The mayor of Belgorod, Valentin Demidov, indicated on the evening of June 1 that two urban TACs had already been filled, and more than 1,600 people had been temporarily accommodated there.

“We are now starting to fill in the third paragraph. It can accommodate more than 1000 people. Residents of Shebekin receive everything necessary. We organized food and medical care. Volunteers and psychologists are working,” he added.

At the same time, many residents of Shebekin are asking for help to evacuate them from the city. They leave the appropriate calls in the premises audience and on pages municipal and regional authorities, some are also calling for an emergency regime in the region.

The downing of a drone in Belgorod and an attempt by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to cross the border

In the Belgorod region over the past day, according to Gladkov, five “arrivals” were recorded, all of them fell on the village of Shchetinovka, which was hit by artillery. There were no casualties or damage.

Around 5:00 p.m., the head of the region reports that an explosion of an unknown device occurred in Belgorod. According to preliminary data, a drone fell on the roadway. The city’s mayor, Valentin Demidov, said the explosion occurred on the roadway on Shchorsa Street, near the Rosneft gas station.

As a result of the incident, two people were injured: one man was hospitalized with a suspected concussion, the second received minor bruises. A car was also damaged. According to residents of nearby houses, windows were damaged as a result of the explosion in the high-rise buildings.

In addition, on the morning of June 1, quasi-military telegram channels spoke of an attempt by the Ukrainian armed forces to cross the border into the Belgorod region and battles involving a tank. Military correspondent Oleksandr Kots claimed that the Ukrainian army tried to break into the Belgorod region near the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka under the guise of aviation and using engineering equipment. Gladkov and the regional operational headquarters did not confirm information about the attempted breakthrough.

In the afternoon, the Ministry of Defense reported details of an attempt by Ukrainian formations to penetrate the territory of the Belgorod region. According to the agency, two companies of motorized infantry reinforced with tanks took part in the attack. More than 30 assailants were killed, they did not violate the border, the ministry said.

Later military department released another press release giving more details on the fighting in the area. According to the Defense Ministry, at around 3 a.m. a group of 30 people, three armored fighting vehicles and four pickup trucks attacked the Shebekino checkpoint on the Russian-Ukrainian border and residential areas of the Tavolzhanka settlement. .

According to the ministry, the attempted attack was foiled “as a result of competent and selfless actions by units of the Group of Western Forces”. Up to ten people were killed in the fighting. After the shelling, the rest withdrew towards Pletnevka on the Ukrainian side of the border.

After that, according to the Defense Ministry, another group of up to 70 people, five tanks, four armored vehicles, seven vans and a Kamaz truck attempted to enter Russian territory from Pletnevka and neighboring Volchansk. As a result of the fighting, the Ukrainian side lost 12 people, two armored vehicles and a van.

Two more groups advanced towards Novaya Tavolzhanka on both sides of the Seversky Donets River. One of them numbering 15 people, according to the military department, exploded in a minefield, the other dispersed after an oncoming fire. In total, according to the Ministry of Defense, more than 50 people were killed in the border area with Ukraine, and the Grad multiple rocket launcher system was also destroyed.
