Bombing and looting in Khartoum as conflict enters eighth week

– Published on:

Fighting between the two sides escalated late Saturday after a ceasefire agreement brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States ended.

The war displaced more than 1.2 million people inside Sudan, prompted around 400,000 people to flee to neighboring countries and caused severe damage to the capital, during which the remaining population was at the mercy of battles, airstrikes and looting.

On Monday, residents reported that fighting had taken place for the second day in a row in the capital’s three cities, which are Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri. They said Omdurman witnessed ground clashes in a rare incident, in addition to shelling and fighting in the eastern region of Khartoum and the southern end of the capital.

Resident Muhammad Saleh, 37, said the neighborhood he lives in in central Omdurman is being openly looted every day with no one intervening to prevent this, adding that the clashes and shelling will not stop not.

The RSF say they are working to protect civilians by arresting thieves.

Some of those who have fled the war have headed to neighboring countries such as Chad, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, countries already reeling from poverty, conflict and dwindling humanitarian aid .

The arrival of nearly 14,000 people in northeastern CAR and the halt in cross-border trade “put additional pressure on the limited resources available to assist the 130,000 most vulnerable people”, Mohamed said. Ayweya, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for the Central African Republic. press conference in Geneva on vulnerability in the region.

The war has also sparked unrest in Darfur, in the far west of Sudan, an area already plagued by mass displacement due to the previous conflict and where residents of several towns and villages have reported attacks by militias linked to Arab nomadic tribes.

Militants monitoring the area said at least 40 people had been killed and dozens injured in the town of Kutum in North Darfur state over the past few days. Residents also reported widespread looting and insecurity in the area.

On Monday, the RSF released a video claiming to have captured the army headquarters in Kutum, a trading center and one of the largest towns in the state. Rapid Support has a power base in Darfur with its origins in Arab-dominated militias.

There was no immediate comment from the army, which on Sunday denied that the RSF had taken control of the town.

Communications have been cut for long periods in parts of Darfur, where aid groups are struggling to deliver humanitarian supplies.

In El-Obeid, 360 km southwest of Khartoum and located on a main road linking the capital to Darfur, residents reported a large deployment of Rapid Support Forces and the closure of some roads.

The past few days have seen the first downpours of the rainy season, which is likely to further hamper relief efforts already hampered by bureaucratic and logistical problems.
