Chinese Foreign Minister meets ICAO Secretary General in Beijing

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Kang met with Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Beijing on June 6. During this, Qin Kang said that China is a big air transport country, there is a great potential in the development of Chinese civil aviation. China has long served as a first-class council member of ICAO, and through its practical actions supports and promotes international cooperation in civil aviation. China has made positive contributions to the safe, orderly and healthy development of international civil aviation.

The “Belt and Road” cooperation initiative proposed by China and the global development initiative are in line with the concept of “leaving no country behind” supported by ICAO. As such, China welcomes ICAO’s active participation in relevant initiatives, so as to infuse confidence and strength in the revival of global growth and the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with the civil aviation industry playing a strategic leading role .

Chin Kang stressed that the Taiwan issue is central to China’s core interests. China’s position on the issue of China’s Taiwan region’s participation in ICAO activities has always been clear, that is, it should be handled in accordance with the one-China principle. China appreciates ICAO’s correct stand on Taiwan-related issues and hopes that it will continue to provide firm support to China.

In the meeting, Salazar appreciated China’s important leading role in the development of the global aviation industry and thanked China for its strong support of the work of ICAO. He congratulated the Chinese aircraft C919 for successfully putting into commercial operation, and said that ICAO always adheres to the one-China principle, and will continue to properly handle the Taiwan issue in accordance with relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and ICAO. At the same time, ICAO intends to work with China to continuously strengthen civil aviation international cooperation among all countries.
