Demand for Eid Sacrifices Diminished in Egypt…and the Government Intervened

– Published on:

In Egypt, there are about one million and 400,000 head of fattening calves, 2 million and 130,000 head of goats and 240,000 head of camels, according to livestock sector officials at the Ministry of Agriculture and experts who spoke to ‘Sky News Arabia’ about the current market conditions and the measures taken by the government to increase supply. .

But do these movements meet the needs of citizens to buy sacrifices? Or will they turn to sukuk?

The government is taking steps to increase the supply

Tariq Suleiman, head of the livestock sector at the Ministry of Agriculture, explains that in addition to sourcing local production, the government has turned to imports to meet increased demand during Eid :

• Import of more than 170,000 head of cattle and sheep from Sudan and European countries, either for immediate slaughter or for breeding and labelling.

Import of quantities of chilled and processed meat; Propose an offer at prices that suit everyone.

The high prices are due to the lack of fodder; Due to the disruption of import and export movements around the world after the Ukrainian war, fodder represents more than 60 percent of the total operating expenses of meat production costs, and the crisis of its supply has been brought under control through contract farming, in addition to providing an increase in the amount of fodder crops such as corn and soybeans.

Parliamentarian Abdel Moneim Imam, the head of justice, says calf prices are still high despite a slight drop in prices recently, citing “high fodder prices, which reduce the citizen’s ability to buy sacrifice, while ‘he turns to soukuk.’

At the same time, Imam expects prices to come down somewhat in the coming days, with the supply of fodder and the import of further quantities of livestock.

Eid sacrifice price

The methods of buying the sacrifice of Eid are according to the desire of the buyer, either by share, which reaches 9 thousand pounds and weighs about 30 kilos, or a quarter of a calf at 12 thousand pounds and weighs 40 kilos of pure meat, according to figures monitored by Amin Othman, a butcher and owner of the Hadith livestock farm. .

Many citizens prefer to buy live calves, and they are slaughtered with their lore, and they share the sacrificial meat and then distribute it with their lore, and the lowest price for calves is 50,000 pounds, rising to 80,000 depending on the weight of the calf, says Othman, who so far sees a significant decrease in the number of those who are ready to buy. .

How to choose the right sacrifice?

Tariq Suleiman warns that the citizen can go to medical and agricultural services to help them choose, but if they choose to purchase the sacrifice themselves, they should consider the following:

• The animal’s head is turned up, not down, and the eye color is bright white with no yellowing, redness or tearing.

• The nose has no mucous secretions and the animal’s respiratory process is normal without two approaches.

• Mouth without secretions and tongue without fissures.

• No cracks, boils or skin ulcers.

• Hair or wool does not come off easily, and complete without gaps.

• The legs of the 4 calves are tight, painful and not thin.

• The front of the chest and the neck are full of texture; Which means an increase in the proportion of meat.

• Absence of swelling of the rumen and abdomen on pressure.

• The animal’s back is clean and free of secretions.
