Margot Robbie’s best movie roles

– Published on:

She played a sexually harassed Fox News anchor, a brash and determined figure skater, an aspiring comic book artist, an aspiring 1920s starlet, a typical wolf to Wall Street wife Queen Elizabeth I, and actress Sharon Tate. But whatever role she takes on, Margot Robbie is always up for a challenge, collecting scenes and hearts and cementing her status as a major movie star, working alongside Hollywood’s most professional actors and directors.

Born July 2, 1990 in Dalby, Australia, Robbie has been building a resume for 15 years now, transitioning from aspiring television actress to star roles. She already has two Oscar nominations in store for Tonya Against Everyone (2017) and Scandal (2019), and we no doubt have more to come. 2023 is no exception for the hard-working and determined Margot. In May, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City was released, in which she starred with Edward Norton, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton and Willem Dafoe. In July, the world will see Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, where the actress plays the famous doll. And before that, he worked with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Damien Chazelle, Adam McKay and David O. Russell. In this review we recall the bright film roles of Robbie and try to unravel the secret of his success.

“Tune Up” (2015)

A crime drama in which Robbie diverted the public’s attention from Oscar winner Will Smith to herself. Smith’s hero, a con man named Nick teaches wannabe Jess (Robbie) his “tricks”. In the story, she falls in love with him, as you might expect, but what becomes unpredictable is that she saves the whole movie with her acting. The painting, which claimed the status of “forgotten the next day”, acquired, thanks to Margo, depth and meaning.

“Boyfriend from the Future” (2013)

A melodrama about time travel. And not bad. Protagonist Tim (Donal Gleason) learns that the men in his family can “disappear” into the past. Having set himself the goal of finding a girlfriend, he discovers her in the person of Mary (Rachel McAdams), but before that he has an unpleasant experience with Charlotte, who was played by Margot Robbie. The actress did a great job of making the viewer believe why her character turned down the odd young man.

Amsterdam (2022)

The image of David O. Russell is a strange symbiosis of genres, mercilessly criticized by film critics. In the historic, comedic and mystical crime thriller, Robbie played the mysterious nurse Valerie Voz, who creates artwork from the fragments removed from the wounded. There’s almost nothing historically reliable in the picture, but Margot gives the heroine an awkward and infectious charm, putting the viewer on the hook.

“The Big Short” (2015)

Although she has little screen time here, she inspires viewers. Looks like she’s playing herself, sipping champagne in the bathroom and talking about the collapse of the financial system due to subprime mortgages. Participation in the film became a landmark for Robbie, defining the canon of roles. The screen appearance of Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt did not hamper the box office. However, Margo nearly stole the show in just over a minute.

“Scandal” (2019)

A phenomenal cast (Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, John Lithgow, Allison Janney, etc.) covered a biopic about real events that took place behind the scenes at Fox News. Robbie played fictional character Kayla Pospisil, who became the target of some of the “dirtiest” innuendos from program founder Roger Ailes. Margo brought warmth, humanity and versatility to the screen, which film critics and film scholars couldn’t help but nominate her for an Oscar for her performance in a minor role.

“The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013)

An impressive and beautifully acted dark comedy/crime thriller from the incomparable Scorsese. The plot is based on the book by Jordan Belfort, in which he describes the “difficult times” of working at the famous American stock exchange. The main character was played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Margo appears as his second wife, Naomi, a woman who does not accept her husband’s eccentric behavior. The most striking scene was DiCaprio crawling on his knees in an attempt to beg for forgiveness and Robbie’s shoe, aimed at his partner’s forehead.

“Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood” (2019)

Set in the realities of the 1960s, the epic picture of Tinseltown, which Tarantino considers his finest work. Margot plays Sharon Tate, an actress murdered by Manson family fanatics in 1969. In the story, she escapes a horrific fate by surviving the attack and befriending Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) in the place. Robbie’s perfectly polished and natural performance fills the sunny Tate with palpable tenderness and light. Another candidacy for the Oscar, but this time remained unanswered.

“Tonya Against Everyone” (2017)

This movie rightfully earned the actress an Oscar nomination for her performance in the title role. She did a great job playing Tonya Harding, a talented but dimwitted figure skater who couldn’t think of anything better than to stage an attack on her rival Nancy Carrigan at the 1994 World Championships. With her performance, Robbie elevates Harding to the rank of a tragic character, revealing the nuance and the pressure exerted on the ruthless Tonya before a career-wide event.

“Babylon” (2022)

Critics were divided on the quality of Damien Chazelle’s painting, which enlightens Hollywood of the 20s and 30s. But there was unanimity on Robbie’s chaotic and disarming performance. She is incredibly good as the fictional “starlet” Nellie Laroy (prototype Clara Bow), who would have been received after Emma Stone’s rejection. In confirmation of those words, Margot’s energetic performance earned her Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations.
