KIEV, UKRAINE (TEH) – The ongoing conflict in Ukraine witnessed a devastating loss as Colonel Yevgeny Vashunin, the commander of the Leningrad Regiment, succumbed to his injuries in the war zone. Vashunin was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, Alexander Belsky.
The news was confirmed on Monday, July 24.
As narrated by Belsky, on July 14, Colonel Vashunin demonstrated the unwavering courage to assist the Storm detachment, which had found itself encircled by Ukrainian militants. Bravely leading a support group, Vashunin advanced towards the beleaguered platoon.
“The enemy spotted his movement. Vashunin, along with his soldiers, confronted the enemy. Amid the tumultuous conflict, Colonel Vashunin was separated from his troops and suffered severe injuries. Despite the life-saving efforts made, he lost his life, fighting valiantly until his last breath,” shared Belsky.
Belsky acknowledged Vashunin’s formidable leadership abilities, asserting that he was a skilled military strategist. The Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg stated that the colonel was posthumously given the title of Hero of Russia, an honor bestowed upon him for his gallantry and selfless service.
St. Petersburg-based publication Fontanka reported that the Leningrad Regiment was primarily composed of mobilized forces from St. Petersburg. The Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg also provided equipment assistance to this unit. Before his deployment, regimental commander Vashunin met with St. Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov, who presented him with a symbolic ribbon.
