The American government and the Senate made a breakthrough and agreed on a billion-dollar aid package in the face of the Corona crisis. According to the Bloomberg news agency, the package is expected to include extensive measures: billions of support for businesses, states and cities, checks for most Americans, loans and help for small businesses to maintain their wages, more expansionary unemployment insurance, tax deferrals, and numerous other aids.

The agreement was reached after a negotiation marathon between Senate Democratic Chairman Chuck Schumer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The Senate could vote on it on Wednesday. The house would have to pass the bill before it gets on President Donald Trump‘s desk.

House representative Nancy Pelosi had been consulted throughout the negotiations. Yesterday Pelosi had promised that her house could quickly adopt an aid package with one vote if the government and the Senate reached an agreement. That does not require members to travel to Washington – as long as the bill does not contain “poison pills” that the Democrats would object to. That would also require the unanimous approval of all Republicans in the House of Representatives.

The subsequent Republican, MP Steve Scalise, told his team during a conference call on Tuesday evening that the best option was to adopt a Senate package to boost the economy, a spokeswoman said.

According to UN experts, the United States could soon become the new epicenter of the corona pandemic in Europe. But President Donald Trump wants to relax the strict measures against the spread of the virus before Easter if possible. “You can destroy a country by closing it,” Trump said on Tuesday. “I would love to have the country reopened and ready by Easter,” said the president on the conservative Fox News channel. “Our country wants to get back to work.” A “massive recession or depression” threatens “more” people than “flu”. With this word Trump apparently meant the coronavirus-induced lung disease Covid-19.
