As Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud noted during a meeting of Arab foreign ministers ahead of the summit, “the world is going through severe trials that demand that we stand together to resist them.” “We must develop new mechanisms to solve the problems facing Arab countries,” said Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
According to Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Jordan Gleb Desyatnikov, who expressed RIA News , “the return of Syria to the pan-Arab family is a step towards peace and stability in the region”. As the diplomat noted, “the entire Arab community will benefit, because together it is possible to overcome all difficulties, and there are now many such challenges in the region.” He believes that the issues of restoring trade ties between regional capitals, strengthening security and combating terrorism could become the most beneficial topic of dialogue. Whether it is so, the next summit tomorrow will show.

As indicated CASS According to Lebanese analyst Nidal Sabi, “the summit meeting in Jeddah will go down in history as a summit of consolidation of Arab ranks, despite pressure from the United States and the West, which tried to prevent the president Bashar al-Assad to participate in it”. .”

The King of Jordan, Abdallah II, also places great hopes on the meeting of the leaders of the Arab League. “The Jeddah summit will mark the beginning of a new period of joint Arab action on a solid foundation of economic integration. Our peoples will have a unique opportunity to change living conditions in this region, which has paid a heavy price conflicts and tensions”, declared the monarch. According to him, the Arab countries are confronted with a number of problems which must be dealt with in close cooperation: the presence of refugees, the use of water resources, the fight against drugs, improving the level of education and health, and environmental challenges.

According to SAR Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad, his country’s participation in the Arab League summit is “a new opportunity for Damascus to tell Arab countries that it is not looking to the past, but to the future. ‘coming”. He assured that Syria is committed to the comprehensive development of relations with its neighbors.
It should be noted that Syria withdrew from the political life of the region after an armed conflict broke out on the territory of the republic in 2011. At the height of the crisis, the SAR’s membership in the Arab League has been suspended. Most Arab countries withdrew their ambassadors and joined in the economic boycott of the republic. In recent years, Damascus has managed to improve relations only with Abu Dhabi and Manama, and in 2018 the authorities of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain restored the work of their diplomatic missions in Syria. As analysts explained at the time, these changes were the result of Damascus’ success in returning the territories to government control. However, other countries outside the region were in no hurry to change their position vis-à-vis the SAR, although there were already ideas of the republic returning to the League of Arab States.

The situation changed after the devastating earthquake in February, which mainly affected Turkey and Syria. The Arab states have moved closer to the SAR and provided it with significant humanitarian aid. Then Riyadh and Damascus agreed to open embassies. And this example is clearly ready to be followed by other countries in the region.

According to experts, the change of situation is facilitated by the understanding that a further isolation of Damascus does not make sense, President Bashar al-Assad having retained power in the republic. The reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran has also had an impact. Riyadh and Tehran have agreed to restore diplomatic relations and open embassies. Analysts expected that the rapprochement of the two countries could have a positive effect on the situation in the region. The situation around Syria may well be the consequence that experts have predicted.

In addition, one must take into account the general situation in the world, where the United States is losing its hegemonic role, and its attempts to interfere in Middle Eastern affairs are already causing discontent. Indeed, Arab League members ultimately ignored signals sent by Washington that Syria did not deserve to be readmitted to the League of Arab States.
