Appeal to Seehofer: prevent humanitarian catastrophe

– Published on:

Mainz – Rhineland-Palatinate Integration Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens) has asked Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) to implement his almost one-month-old announcement and to get people out of the refugee camps in Greece. “It is important to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and to get those who are particularly vulnerable immediately out of the completely overcrowded camps,” Spiegel said in Mainz on Tuesday. “The situation in the camps on the Greek islands, particularly in Moria, is becoming dangerously acute.”

«Horst Seehofer can no longer act so despondent and half-heartedly. After Luxembourg, Germany must now also show that it is fulfilling its international humanitarian responsibility and taking on its share in reducing suffering, »Spiegel said. Rhineland-Palatinate is ready to contribute its share and to accept unaccompanied minor refugees and seriously ill children.

At the beginning of March, Seehofer was open to accepting children and adolescents from Greek refugee camps. He campaigned for a “coalition of the willing” in the EU. Greece has now initiated the procedure for the departure of underage refugees to other EU countries. Twelve unaccompanied minors are expected to be brought to Luxembourg in the coming days.

The AfD Group’s spokesman for migration policy in the state parliament, Matthias Joa, criticized Spiegel’s move as “completely irresponsible in view of the current corona situation in Germany and Rhineland-Palatinate”. Adequate accommodation with compliance with quarantine regulations is not possible either in the refugee shelters or in the youth welfare facilities.
