U.S. senators, representatives of both parties, presented a bill restricting access to firearms. The Senate on Tuesday cleared the first hurdle to passing a bipartisan measure aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous people, reports The New York Times .

This text “supported by members of both parties is a step forward and will save lives. Although that is not all we want, this law is urgently needed,” said Chuck Schumer, leader of the Democrats in the Senate.

The most important law against gun violence

Lawmakers said they are likely to vote procedurally first on the package on Tuesday night, after bridging differences on issues including abortion, red flag laws and domestic violence.

–  I believe that this week we will pass a law that will become the most important part of the legislation against gun violence that Congress has adopted in 30 years. This is progress. And more importantly, it is bipartisan progress, said Senator Chris Murphy, a leading Democrat in the negotiations.

–  This two-party law on gun security is progress and will save lives. Although that is not all we want, this law is urgently needed – said Schumer, the leader of the majority in the Senate.

Bipartisan Gun Law

Sumer’s Republican counterpart, minority leader Mitch McConnell, described the law as a “bipartisan gun law” in a statement promising his own support.

Since the 100-seat Senate is evenly divided, the passage of the law will require the support of at least 10 Republicans.
