There are many people in the Biden administration in America who wanted India to oppose Russia in the Ukraine case and if it did not agree, then strict steps should have been taken regarding whatever exemption it has got on the S-400. But the number of such people is very less. Most people are of the opinion that if India wants to maintain relations with Russia, then there is no need to act harshly against it.
In this context, the India-US summit organized by Congressional India Cox co-chairman Ro Khanna on Wednesday was attended by Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resource Affairs Richard Verma, US Ambassador to India Eric Gasreti and former US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
All three acknowledged the fact that the US needs to show strategic restraint towards India regarding relations with Russia. All three believe that India not only supports Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but it has advocated many times on international forums to solve the problem peacefully and through dialogue between the two countries. In a meeting of the SCO, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had even said that this is not the time to go to war.
In fact, the belief of these three that India has maintained its strategic independence and at the same time it has adopted the policy of maintaining relations with both America and Russia for its national interests is also its compulsion. All three agreed that on one hand its neighbor Pakistan is a nuclear-rich fundamentalist country and on the other hand there is an expansionist country like China which tries to intimidate it. India knows that if it openly supports America against Russia, Moscow will also openly support China against India. Right now the situation is that the way India has maintained coordination with Russia, due to the anti-India sentiment between China and Russia, no strategy has been made.
However, China is the biggest challenge for India and to deal with it, India is adopting this strategy from its side and it is also making security preparations from its side. On the issue of its national interests, India neither cares about China nor America or Russia. Whatever he should be doing, he is doing.
