Tokyo: Japan’s state broadcaster NHK television reported on Saturday that a massive explosion rocked a port in western Japan during Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit, but there were no casualties. NHK reported that Kishida had arrived in Wakayama’s Saizaki port to encourage a candidate for his ruling party in local elections. He was about to start his speech when there was an explosion.
According to NHK, a suspect was captured at the scene. Video footage aired on the channel showed several police officers in uniform and plainclothes surrounding the arrested man. Kishida’s predecessor Shinzo Abe was assassinated during an election campaign nine months before the incident.
