Iceland allows US nuclear submarines to refuel

– Published on:

Icelandic authorities have allowed US Navy nuclear submarines to stop off their coast and refuel, followed a press release from the Icelandic government. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

As noted, the main condition of the Icelanders in this matter is the absence of nuclear weapons on board American submarines.

It should be noted that US nuclear submarines will be able to make short-term visits to Iceland, including for crew rotation.

“A condition for the arrival of Allied warships in the country is that the governments of the respective countries know and comply with the provisions of the national security policy of Iceland according to which Iceland and its territorial waters are declared free of ‘nuclear weapons,’ reads the statement.

The document also says that in recent years, Washington and Reykjavik have significantly expanded their defense cooperation in the North Atlantic region.
