The beginning of the celebrations was given at the monument “Mound of Glory” not far from the capital. The President of Belarus also arrived there. In July 1944, one of the main battles of Operation Bagration for the liberation of Belarus took place here. Later it was called the “Minsk Cauldron” – Soviet troops managed to surround and defeat the group of 105,000 Nazis. The monument was erected in honor of the feat of the Soviet people.

Alexander Lukashenko congratulated those present on the holiday and urged Belarusians to take care of the most valuable asset – their native land:

– We have one land, one country, our Belarus. We kept it. Now it’s your turn – the youth. Take care of this piece of land, you won’t have another.

In the evening, the Head of State presented prizes to the cultural workers of the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater. The President of Belarus wished those present creative inspiration, success and bright new projects for the benefit of the Fatherland. It was decided that the best Independence Day creatives would now be honored each year.

Until the point

On the eve of Independence Day, the cultural and educational institution “Ways of Culture” with the support of the Russian Embassy in Belarus organized an exhibition “Partisan Chronicle” and a concert “I am a soldier of the Second World War”. The event called “Victory Addresses” was timed to coincide with the date of the official start of the creation of partisan detachments and sabotage groups. On June 29, 1941, a corresponding directive was issued by the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR and the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks. Coincidentally, on June 29, 1944, the start of the Minsk operation, part of the Bagration offensive operation, also took place. By the way, June 29 has also become a memorable date in Russia – it is the Day of Partisans and Underground Fighters.

The “Victory Speech” event was attended by Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov.
