Judiciary cannot rewrite the constitution: Shehbaz Sharif

– Published on:

Islamabad: Amid the ongoing constitutional and political crisis in the country, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the judiciary to re-evaluate its role and become the protector of the Constitution. Addressing the launch ceremony of the 1973 Constitution mobile application, Sharif said that it does not happen anywhere in the world that a court issues a stay order against a law which is still in force.

He said that it is time for state institutions to come together to uphold the Constitution keeping the national interest supreme, the report said. Sharif is of the view that Pakistan is currently at the crossroads of constitutional challenges that require state institutions to come to the fore. The Constitution has its roots in the Parliament and as per the globally recognized concept, the Judiciary can only interpret the law but cannot rewrite it. Sharif said the 1973 Constitution was the result of hard work by politicians from all backgrounds, who reached a consensus in the making of the sacred document.

He recalled that stalwart statesmen of their time including former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Mufti Mahmood, Khan Abdul Wali Khan and many other political leaders rose above their political differences to write a constitution that served as a binding force for the federation. Work done. Sharif said though politicians have committed mistakes in the past, now is the time to rectify them. “We have actually learned a lesson and we are trying to get Pakistan out of these problems,” Sharif said, according to a Geo News report.
