Pune. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said the violence in Kolhapur and some other places over posters and social media posts allegedly glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan was part of Maharashtra’s culture. do not conform.

Tension prevailed in Kolhapur, about 285 km from Pune, on Tuesday after some people allegedly put a picture of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan and an objectionable audio message as their social media ‘status’. The next day right-wing organizations protested at Shivaji Chowk.

The police had to resort to lathicharge to control the stone pelting and violence, which led to protests. Thirty-six people were arrested in connection with various incidents of violence. Talking to reporters in Baramati, Pawar said, “People of the state should maintain peace where such incidents have taken place. Whatever happened at two-three places, happened, it is not in accordance with the culture of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra is a peace-loving state, and people here do not have the tendency to take law into their own hands. Common people have to pay. I appeal to ensure that such things do not happen for the good of the common people. People should fully cooperate with the police.”

He said that Kolhapur has a rich history and peace should be established by remembering the great ideals of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and Tarabai. Pawar said, “The interest of the common people should be protected. I am sure if a sensible approach is adopted by the majority of the people and the state government, the situation will change. I am sure this picture will change.”
