Meeting between Erdogan and Assad ahead of Turkey’s elections described as unlikely

– Published on:

A meeting between Turkish and Syrian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad before Turkey’s presidential elections is unlikely, said the representative of the Council for Security and Foreign Policy under Turkish leader Chagry Erhan.

Presidential elections in Turkey, according to Erdogan, will take place on May 14. The Head of State must sign a decree on this subject on March 10.

As Erhan clarified, the Turkish leader is not against such a meeting, but the devastating earthquakes changed everything. The schedule of the head of state has undergone changes – he spends three days a week in the disaster area. With elections slated for less than 74 days, Erhan said he was unlikely to find a way to even take a picture with Assad. However, he allowed such negotiations to take place after the elections.

Erdogan said the day before that he had proposed to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to hold a meeting of the heads of state of Turkey, Russia and Syria, but that it should be preceded by a meeting of the heads of the services of intelligence, the ministry of defense and the foreign ministry.
