Retirement makes people healthy

Retirement makes people healthier.

A new study from across 10 European countries found that giving up work has a transformative impact on a person’s health as those who had retired were more likely to be in either good or excellent health than those in jobs.

Researchers followed over 20,000 people aged between 50 and 80 and found that individuals who had left work were less likely to have physical difficulties with everyday activities such as housework and gardening.

The experts found that women feel happier than men after quitting work as it typically gives them more time to spend with family and friends.

Professor Reyn van Ewijk, who led the study for Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany, said: “Those with stressful jobs, who are overloaded with work, may feel real relief after retirement, and generally feel healthier and better in themselves.”
