Riots across the country: The killing of a 17-year-old boy by a police officer sparked mass pogroms in France News

He loved sports, especially rugby, but his real passion was cars. He adored cool cars, photos of which he stuck on the walls of his bedroom, and when he had money, he rented prestigious sports cars himself or with the help of adult friends – for a day , two, no more, to ride with the breeze.

That day, which ended tragically for him, Nael was driving a Mercedes. Yes, not simple, but a two-door yellow AMG. Once on Avenue Joliot-Curie, with heavy morning traffic, I decided to break the rules and use the corridor for public transport, but no luck – I didn’t notice two policemen a motorcycle.

With the arrival of dusk, riots began in Nanterre, which turned into a real riot

When they ordered him to pull over to the side of the road and turn off the engine, he did not obey and continued on his way. Motorized azhans chased the sports car and quickly forced it to a stop. One approached the car, pointing his service weapon at the guy. However, he gave gas and at that moment the policeman shot Nael in the chest. Mercedes rushed forward, covered a dozen meters and crashed into a pole.

When they arrived at the scene, paramedics found the young man dead. In addition to him, there were two of his comrades in the car, one was arrested, the other fled and was put on the wanted list.

As a result of this state of emergency, the Nanterre prosecutor’s office opened two investigations. One was based on a report written by police officers who said the guy in the Mercedes tried to kill them by running them over with a car, which is why they allegedly fired in self-defense. However, soon enough a video appeared on social media, which depicts the scene above, leaving no doubt as to what happened. The police officer who fatally injured Nael has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Whether he did it intentionally or accidentally, investigators and experts have yet to find out. However, many are now wondering: would a police officer pull the trigger if a light-skinned person was driving a two-door AMG?

It must be assumed that the inhabitants of the suburbs, and especially young people, had an unequivocal answer to this question, and literally on the same day, with the onset of dusk, riots broke out in Nanterre, which turned into a real riot. Hundreds, if not thousands, of teenagers and older men began setting fire to garbage cans in the streets, then to cars (around 50 were set on fire). They erected barricades, destroyed bus stops and, of course, went into battle with police units, as well as special gendarmerie forces. Firecrackers, fragments of asphalt, cobblestones were flying in their direction. The rebels were dispersed with tear gas and truncheons.

Nael had Algerian roots. The inhabitants of the Parisian suburbs are convinced that this is why the police fired. Photo: social networks

But that’s not all. News of Nael’s death in a forest fire spread across the country. First, the Parisian suburbs burned – Suresnes, Asnières-sur-Seine, Billancourt and many others. In Mantes-la-Joli, 60 kilometers west of the capital, during the performances, the town hall building of one of the city’s blocks burned down completely. Spontaneous protests even reached Bordeaux and Marseille, where it was also hot.

To deal with the protesters, according to the local Interior Ministry, two thousand law enforcement officers were involved. It wasn’t until the morning of the next day that relative calm set in. However, this does not mean that in the coming days the flame will not blaze with renewed vigor.

The French authorities are seriously worried. Here, with a shudder, they recall the fall of 2005, when two teenagers were killed fleeing police in the capital’s suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, after which for many weeks the country was almost on the brink of civil war. No wonder President Emmanuel Macron, currently in Marseille, said that “nothing can justify the death of a young man” and that “justice must be served without delay”.
