Saarland bill toughening penalties for threats against doctors approved

The Knesset has approved in a preliminary reading a bill by former cabinet minister Gideon Saar aimed at toughening penalties for attacks on doctors and medical personnel.

According to Saar’s proposal, the maximum penalty for assaulting medical personnel would be increased from 3 to 5 years in prison, and the crime would be classified as serious. The amendment will apply to all doctors, including paramedics and paramedics (MADA and Ihud Atsala).

This is a bill that Saar passed as justice minister in the 24th Knesset in the first reading and is resubmitting it to the 25th Knesset for consideration.

Former Minister, Knesset Member Gideon Saar: “I applaud the Knesset’s decision to approve my bill to increase penalties for assaults against medical personnel. We are seeing more and more cases of violence in hospitals and beyond. Doctors and medical staff work around the world with dedication and professionalism, and we have an obligation to support them and ensure their safety. To combat violence, it is is necessary to introduce severe penalties for its manifestation, which is the subject of my bill.
