Five containers from India’s Jindal Stainless, en route to the Russian Federation, have been in the Belgian port of Antwerp for about a year, Reuters writes, citing a message from the company. The cargo is approximately 100 metric tons of stainless steel, according to a company spokesperson.

The containers were sent to Russia in February 2022. In the context of the imposition of sanctions by the European Union, the cargo was held in the Belgian port. Although stainless steel is not included in the list of products subject to restrictive measures, it is still in the Belgian port. Jindal Stainless insists on customs clearance procedure for further transportation.

In March 2022, Belgian authorities reported that approximately 1,500 containers intended for transfer to Russia were blocked in the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. The country’s customs and excise administration has stressed that the shipment of goods is only possible if documents are presented indicating that the products are not included in the sanctions list.
