Teacher fired in Florida for suggesting kids write obituaries about their own deaths – Reuters

The man started a conversation with schoolchildren like this: “Today is the last day of your life. Write an obituary about yourself.” According to the teacher, such an approach to analyzing a hot topic was supposed to inspire high school students to reflect on their own lives and achievements, as well as help them understand what they want to achieve. “If they were to die in 24 hours, what would they do differently than yesterday? I gave this mission for them to get rid of everything else and show them what’s important in this world,” Keene explained. at FOX 35 Orlando news station. At the end of the missions, he made it clear that he “did not intend to upset anyone”.

But the clause did not work. Impressive high school students complained about him to the school administration. His management immediately questioned the “victims” and at the end of the school day gave the teacher an ultimatum: either he leaves of his own free will or he will be fired with a scandal. A school district spokesperson later released a statement strongly condemning Keane’s action and calling his posting “inappropriate.” The teacher himself, who joined the teaching staff in January and was on probation, was expelled for arbitrariness in working with children.

Keane is convinced he did nothing wrong. On the contrary, according to the teacher, he was trying to give high school students a life lesson. Additionally, the man timed the fatal occupation with safety drills during a possible mass execution and discussed with the students how to keep a cool head during the killer’s invasion of the grounds of school. Additionally, Keane urged teens to think about “positive actions” they could take to prevent mass shootings and how the “epidemic” of gun violence has affected their lives. In a social media post, the man accused schools of paying “more attention to censorship and human rights” than preparing students for real life.
