Scientists from the University of Bristol, located in the United Kingdom, have found a new way to prevent kidney failure. This method will help thousands of people suffering from this disease, according to Kidney International magazine.
About 10,000 people in England join the ranks of kidney failure patients every year. In most cases, the causes are not related to a genetic predisposition. The nephrotic syndrome, a condition in which proteins appear in the urine and the level of albumin in the blood drops, leads to global disorders of the functioning of the kidneys, which can go as far as life on dialysis. This protein is notably responsible for providing the body with amino acids, transporting hormones and fatty acids in the blood.
The study found that in patients with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (without obvious cause), the functioning of kidney cells is affected by the activation of the PAR-1 receptor. Now the main treatment is with steroids, but these drugs have a lot of side effects. And even a kidney transplant does not always guarantee a positive result – the new organ was also at the mercy of nephrotic syndrome.
According to scientists, PAR-1 receptor blockers will help stop the development of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. They will allow you not only to eliminate ambiguous steroids for the body from treatment, but also to protect the kidneys during transplantation. Experts hope that their work will soon lead to the emergence of the desired drug.
