Malda. Two people were killed in a major fire that broke out at a market in West Bengal’s Malda district on Tuesday morning. Police gave this information.
District Magistrate Nitin Singhania said that the fire broke out in the godown of ‘Carbide’ in Netaji Municipal Market, which later spread to the godowns in the vicinity. Local traders said that firecrackers were kept in one of these godowns. Officials said that the dead have been identified as Ganesh Rishi (40) and Manglu Mandal (45), a cart driver. Two others are undergoing treatment at the hospital and their condition is stable.
Vice President of ‘Malda Merchant Chamber of Commerce’, Kamlesh Bihani said that 12 godowns, including a godown full of firecrackers, were gutted. Police said that five fire engines are stationed on the spot, the fire has not yet been fully controlled. A police official said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The investigation is on.
Bihani said it is feared that the ‘carbide’ used to ripen the mangoes fell on the ground, causing the explosion and the fire. To prevent the fire from spreading, power supply was cut in a part of Malda. was closed, but was restored later. Heavy deployment of police force has been made at the spot. In the last eight days, at least 16 people have lost their lives.
