Kolkata. The 80-year-old historic Howrah Bridge over the Hooghly river, connecting the cities of Howrah and Kolkata, will undergo a detailed inspection after a gap of 11 years. This information was given by the top official of Kolkata Port who maintains this bridge.
Kolkata Port Chairman Rathendra Raman said that a comprehensive inspection of the cantilever bridge would be done after consultation with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He said that the proposed inspection would be done in addition to the routine repairs of the bridge.
Raman said on Wednesday, “We have decided to conduct an in-depth study on the strength of the Howrah bridge, which has not been done for more than a decade. This study will give us important information on how to improve the life of the bridge. ”Another official said that a comprehensive investigation of the strength of the bridge was done 11 years ago.
Howrah Bridge, also known as Rabindra Setu, has a length of 405 meters and a width of 21.6 metres. It has been considered a symbol of Kolkata since its inauguration in 1943. In 1926, a commission under the leadership of Sir RN Mukherjee recommended a special type of suspension bridge to be built over the Hooghly River, after which the construction work of the bridge started. to be done.
About 80,000 vehicles and 4,00,000 pedestrians cross the Howrah Bridge every day and it has become an integral part of their daily lives.
