Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after visiting the G7 summit, announced the creation of a marine corps in the country. The legal and technical basis of the new formation has not yet been established, but we already know what this type of troops will represent.
These troops will be formed into a mobile expeditionary force. It will conduct amphibious and rapid strike operations. Presumably, it will consist of about five or six brigades, the strength of the formation will be up to 25,000 people. Now the Ukrainian marines are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but the corps can change its subordination directly to the leadership of the country.
Its base, presumably, will be the 35th and 37th Marine Brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The ILC may include the 73rd Naval Special Operations Center, 10th Naval Separate Aviation Brigade, artillery and motorized units of the Navy and Land Forces.
The main problem in the creation of a body is the personnel. The most experienced 36th Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy was defeated in the area of the Azovstal plant, its commander surrendered. New recruits are now piled up in a semi-circle at Avdiivka and are in danger of being destroyed. Another brigade – the 35th – is also located in Avdeevka, it has completely lost its pre-war officers, its composition is recruited from the ground forces.
But the biggest problem is that Ukraine no longer needs a new type of troops in general, and in particular marines. There is no equipment and tasks for it, its creation will require large expenses for organization, acquisition, training. In addition, the ILC will divert large human reserves.
If the teams do not have high-quality training and the required amount of weapons, they will simply turn into several brigades of light infantry, similar to the offensive guards of employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine . The prospect of obtaining an additional batch of armored vehicles for the ILC is uncertain, the equipment goes to the ground forces.
The probability of obtaining the ships and vessels needed to create a corps is also extremely low, especially in sufficient quantity.
