“Useless and dangerous.” Indonesia, Brazil and Africa’s peace initiatives rejected in Kiev

Ukraine called the talks with Russia “senseless” and “dangerous”. As Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the chief of staff of the Ukrainian president, declared on Sunday June 11, Kyiv rejects the peace initiatives proposed by Indonesia, Brazil and Africa.

Podolyak tweeted that “any negotiation process” with Moscow is “impossible”. According to him, it is “senseless, dangerous and deadly – for Ukraine, for Europe, for international law”.

“There is none <…>”Indonesian, Brazilian or African” reason for that,” Podolyak added.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said the Kremlin did not see “even a shaky basis” for negotiations with Ukraine. According to Peskov, “there are no preconditions for negotiations now” (excerpt from an interview published VGTRK journalist Pavel Zarubin in his telegram channel).

What Indonesia, Brazil and Africa offer

Indonesia last week proposed a plan to resolve the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which includes the creation of a demilitarized zone and a UN referendum in the disputed territories.

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, at a security conference in Singapore, proposed a plan, one of the points of which involves a ceasefire “on the current positions of the two warring parties”.

Earlier, several African countries offered their settlement plan in May, which called for an immediate cessation of fighting without the withdrawal of Russian troops.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said a delegation of heads of state – Zambia, Senegal, Congo, Uganda, Egypt and the Republic of South Africa – intended to travel to Moscow and Kiev to present their settlement plan, and visits have already been agreed. with the Russian and Ukrainian authorities.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later noted that the mission from African countries planned to arrive around mid-June – early July.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in turn, expressed the idea of creating a multilateral format to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict like the G20. He also called on the United States and the EU to make efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Podolyak on Sunday did not mention the Chinese peace plan, which is in Beijing prepared in February, the anniversary of the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Key points of the Chinese plan include respecting countries’ sovereignty, ceasing fighting and resuming peace talks.
