Sky and DFL negotiate advance payments for clubs

Berlin – Pay-TV broadcaster Sky could potentially help clubs in the first and second football Bundesliga, which are financially heavily burdened, by paying TV money in advance due to the corona crisis.

According to the newspapers of the Funke media group, Sky should negotiate with the German Football League about this financial support for the 36 professional clubs. «We are in constant contact with our long-term partner DFL. In this context, there are active discussions with the aim of finding constructive solutions also with regard to license payments and their potential timing, »said a Sky spokesman.

TV rights holder Sky is currently the league’s largest financier, with an average of EUR 876 million a year. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the game will be suspended in the top two leagues until at least April 30.

Due to the lack of TV revenue, some clubs are missing a multi-digit million figure, and some of them are even at risk of bankruptcy, according to a “kicker” report. The DFL clubs are still waiting for the fourth and final installment for the current season, which is to be paid by TV rights holders in May.
