The Russian Defense Ministry has deployed two MiG-31K interceptor fighters at the Khmeimim Syrian airbase , which were created as high-speed interceptors and are currently used as carriers of the Dagger hypersonic missiles.

Aircraft of this type have been deployed in Syria for the first time. The purpose of their redeployment is to participate in joint exercises of the Aerospace Forces and the Navy in the Mediterranean.

“As part of the exercise at the Russian Khmeimim airbase in the Syrian Arab Republic, a pair of MiG-31K aircraft flew from Russian airfields, which have the ability to use the latest hypersonic missiles from the Dagger complex,” the military department said in a statement.

In May, the Russian military completed the reconstruction of the second runway of the Khmeimim airbase. In the course of the work, the strip cover was completely replaced, new lighting and radio equipment was installed. Thanks to the increase in the length of the GDP, the airbase can now receive all types of aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, including long-range Tu-22M3 bombers and MiG-31K fighters.
