Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country has saved human dignity in Syria, but that it can no longer tolerate new waves of migration.
This came in a speech on Tuesday before the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Erdogan added: “We, as a country that saved the dignity of humanity in the Syrian crisis, can no longer afford new waves of migration.”
He pointed out that 10 years have passed since the human tragedy in Syria, which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions of people before the eyes of the entire world.
He pointed out that while Turkey embraced nearly 4 million Syrians, it fought on the ground with terrorist organizations and flooded the region with blood and tears.
President Erdoğan noted that Turkey is the only NATO ally that has fought and defeated the terrorist organization ISIS head-on.
He also pointed out that Turkey, through its presence on the ground, prevented the massacres and ethnic cleansing carried out by the extensions of the terrorist PKK organization in Syria.
He stated that 462,000 Syrians have voluntarily returned to the areas that Turkey made safe in (northern) Syria, through its efforts and operations in which it offered martyrs.
He also indicated that Turkey’s presence in Idlib (northwestern Syria) saved the lives of millions and prevented their displacement.
“The international community cannot allow the Syrian crisis to continue for another 10 years,” he added.
He stressed that a stronger will must be shown to find a political solution to the Syrian issue on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254 and in a manner that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people.
He stressed the impossibility of accepting the trade-off between terrorist organizations in the region (Syria) and using it as a tool.
