On Sunday March 26, members of the Bundestag from different parties spoke out on a possible deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus. They noted that by such actions Moscow is trying to sow fear in the West. Deutsche Welle writes about this (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation).
For example, defense expert Roderich Kizevetter expressed concern about threats from Russian authorities. According to him, the Kremlin seeks to create fear by maintaining uncertainty about the possibility of nuclear war. He called for calm and drew attention to the fact that Russia had already deployed nuclear weapons in the Kaliningrad region.
Bundestag International Affairs Committee member Norbert Röttgen said the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus does not increase the threat to Europe, as they already exist in the Kaliningrad region. Chairman of the Bundestag’s European Affairs Committee, Anton Hofreiter, noted that threats of nuclear war were already part of the Kremlin’s repertoire and that Russia was seeking to undermine Western support for Ukraine.
SPD MP Ralf Stegner called the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus an “escalation” and urged not to respond to this action by deploying NATO nuclear weapons in Poland.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. He specified that it was about ten planes and the Iskander missile system. He also said that a storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons will be built on the territory of the republic. Putin noted that Russia was doing “the same thing the United States has been doing for decades.”
