At a recent working meeting between the head of the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport of the Russian Ministry of Transport, Zakhary Dzhioev, and the governor of the Astrakhan region, Igor Babushkin, officials discussed the need and opportunities to further deepen the Volga-Caspian Sea Channel.
At present, 9 dredgers with auxiliary bathing facilities are involved in the installation: work boats, barges, barges and motor transports. Until the end of this month, the number of dredgers will be increased to 12, then the number of dredgers will increase by 6 more vehicles.
Until the end of this year, it is planned to increase the depth of the channel to 4.5 meters.
In 2022, during the deepening works, about 5 million cubic meters of earth were lifted from the bottom. This year, this figure will be increased to 12 million cubic meters. The dredging work is expected to be completed in December 2023.
The Volga-Caspian Canal is an important part of the North-South transport route, the purpose of which is the delivery of goods from the northwestern part of Russia to India and other neighboring countries.
Previously, USC experts reported that for efficient operation of the North-South corridor, it is necessary to use at least 45 container ships of the Volgo-Don max class with a capacity of about 5 million tons. About 3 trillion rubles should be allocated for the development of the corridor itself.
