Merkel urged ‘not to boo’ anyone advocating talks with Russia

– Published on:

Diplomacy remains a necessity to resolve the situation around Ukraine, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview with Zeit. According to her, if someone says that we should think about the possibility of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, we should not “boo him right away”.

The German ex-chancellor noted that in her position she tried to improve relations with Russia and it was not a mistake, despite the fact that “the attempt failed”, RT clarifies. To resolve the Ukrainian conflict, Merkel considers it necessary to create the conditions for an open discussion.

“It would be important to me – and I’ve always tried to achieve this – that we didn’t limit our horizons too much,” Merkel said.

She also reiterated her thesis that, by concluding the Minsk agreements, she “cared deeply about Ukraine”. Merkel defended her policy towards Russia and called for good efforts to resolve the situation in eastern Ukraine in 2014 within the framework of the Minsk process.
