Manhattan court rules Trump ‘sexually assaulted’ E. Jean Carroll nearly 30 years ago

On Tuesday, a jury ruled that Donald Trump forced writer E. Jean Carroll to have sex in the 1990s and then defamed her by calling her a “liar.” He must pay him an indemnity of 5 million dollars.

The former US president, who launched a campaign to return to the White House in 2024, will appeal, his spokesman Steven Cheung said. Trump will not have to pay while the case is on appeal.

Carroll, 79, testified in a civil trial that Trump, 76, sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1995 or 1996 and again in October 2022. reputation by writing in a post on his Truth Social platform that his claims are “total fraud”, “deception” and “lies”.

Carroll held his attorneys’ hand during the verdict. She left the courthouse, accompanied by her lawyer Roberta Kaplan, in sunglasses, and smiling, got into the car without speaking to the journalists.

A nine-member jury in Manhattan federal court awarded Trump $5 million in damages and punitive damages. Although the fact that she was forced to have sex was enough to establish Trump’s liability for the physical harm, the jury did not decide whether or not he “raped” her.

The jury deliberated for about three hours before rejecting Trump’s claim that he did not attack Carroll. To convict him, a jury of six men and three women needed a unanimous verdict.

Trump was absent throughout the trial, which began on April 25. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump called the verdict a “shame” and added, “I have no idea who this woman is.”
