Colombo. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has pardoned 988 jailed prisoners who will be released on Friday on the occasion of ‘Vesak Day’, the most important religious festival of Buddhists. A senior officer gave this information.
Jail Department Commissioner and spokesperson Chandana Ekanayake told the media that the President has granted this pardon using the powers conferred under Article 34 of the Constitution of the country. He told that this amnesty has been given on the basis of many terms and conditions. Sri Lanka usually pardons prisoners on Independence Day and during major religious events.
Mr Ekanayake said the clemency did not apply to those convicted of murder, serious drug-related offences, rape and armed robbery.
