2 journalists were killed after reporting on a religious event

Leiner Montero and Dilia Contreras were killed in the car they were traveling in northern Colombia.

Two journalists were killed in the north of Colombia, shortly after reporting on Sunday’s religious festivities in the town of Santa Rosalia de Lima.

The director of an online radio station, Leiner Montero, and the director of a local web portal, Dilia Contreras, were killed by gunmen on a motorcycle who opened fire on a car the journalists were traveling in on the highway.

A third person in the vehicle was also wounded.

Police Chief Andres Serna said Montero left the religious event shortly after he was involved in a fight between several people and that journalist Contreras and another man went with him, reports Anadolu.

–  We are working to shed light on this unfortunate event in which we lost two highly respected journalists – said Serna.

The authorities are investigating whether the events are related to their journalistic work and who could be behind the murder, which took place in a region where several criminal groups are present, including the “Clan del Golfo” and other drug trafficking gangs.

The authorities revealed that the journalists were investigating powerful families in the region who were involved in corruption schemes.
